Young Voices Rise Through Music: “Something More” Debuts at John Dewey High School
This year, creativity, purpose, and community converged at John Dewey High School in an inspiring youth-led project powered by passion, mentorship, and music. Under the guidance of teaching artists and mentors Lawrence and Paul Coles from Thrive Collective’s R.H.Y.M.E. (Rhymes Help Young Minds Excel) and Speek Lyfe, students wrote and recorded an original song and music video titled “Something More.”
In partnership with Project Pivot, the initiative invited students to explore the art of songwriting and the power of personal expression. Beyond lyrics and melodies, the program helped students develop real-world skills—communication, collaboration, public speaking, and media literacy—creating a platform for youth to speak their truth and be heard.
Filmed and edited by videographer Eric Mason, the “Something More” music video captures the authenticity and heart of the student creators. But the project didn’t stop with the music. Students also produced a podcast series and three short public service announcement (PSA) videos on critical topics impacting their community, including gang violence, alcoholism, and the environment.
This powerful multimedia experience is a testament to what young minds can achieve when given the tools, support, and space to lead. It’s not just about making music—it’s about making a difference.
Special thanks to the dedicated staff and students of John Dewey High School for their commitment and support in bringing this vision to life. Together, they’ve proven that youth artistry can move hearts, shift perspectives, and inspire “something more.”
