John Dewey High School Students Use Media to Make a Difference Through Thrive Collective’s Media & Mentoring Program
This spring, students at John Dewey High School partnered with Thrive Collective teaching artists Eric Mason and Randy Mason to participate in the Thrive Collective Media & Mentoring program, powered by Project Pivot. This dynamic collaboration provided students with hands-on opportunities to explore storytelling through media, while addressing real-world issues that impact their lives and communities.
Over the course of the program, students learned the fundamentals of video production, scriptwriting, on-camera presence, and editing using an online video editing software called called VEED. They applied their new skills to create a series of impactful Public Service Announcement (PSA) videos focusing on critical topics such as gang violence, alcoholism, and the environment.
By combining artistic expression with social awareness, the Media & Mentoring program encouraged students not only to develop technical skills, but also to find and amplify their voices. The result: meaningful student-led media projects that aim to educate, inspire, and spark change.
Special thanks to the staff and students of John Dewey High School and our partners at Project Pivot for their continued support and commitment to empowering the next generation of storytellers and changemakers.
