“My Bushwick Life” consists of two vibrant murals created in partnership with the students of CS 145K, celebrating their daily experiences and deep connection to their neighborhood. Inspired by student drawings and storytelling, the mural centers around a park scene — a theme that naturally emerged during our conception sessions, as students overwhelmingly associated their life in Bushwick with time spent outdoors, playing and relaxing in their favorite parks.

The conception phase was a highlight of the project. The 2nd and 3rd grade students were excited to participate, and genuinely passionate about art. Many came to each session eager to share their ideas, create multiple drafts, and offer input on how their drawings could be brought to life on the wall. Their creativity, imagination, and artistic ability were evident from the start. They took pride in designing characters, scenes, and symbols that reflected how they see their neighborhood — full of nature, friendship, activity, and joy.

The final murals showcase scenes of kids skateboarding, playing soccer, exploring green spaces, and surrounded by butterflies, trees, and familiar Bushwick buildings. These details come directly from the students’ vision, making the mural a true reflection of their lives and voices.

The process was strengthened by the support of the school community. The NY Edge community school director was especially helpful in assisting with permits and ensuring the project stayed on track. Once painting began, the energy from students was incredible. Many were excited to recognize their ideas in the final design, and determined to personally paint the parts they had originally drawn.
