THRIVE COLLECTIVE & ROADS TO SUCCESS PRESENT: R.H.Y.M.E. AT M.S. 57 – YOUNG MINDS EXCELLING THROUGH HIP HOP

This spring in East Harlem, something powerful happened inside the walls of M.S. 57 James Weldon Johnson Middle School. A group of middle school students transformed their creativity into purpose through the R.H.Y.M.E. (Rhymes Help Young Minds Excel) program — a collaboration between Thrive Collective and Roads to Success.

Over the course of 10 weeks, students dove deep into the world of Hip Hop, not just as fans but as creators. With the guidance of teaching artists and professional recording artists JSWISS and Randy Mason, students explored songwriting, music production, audio engineering, and the art of performance. Every day brought something new — and every student found a way to participate.

Some picked up the pen, crafting original lyrics that reflected their thoughts and experiences. Others lent their voices to the microphone, stepping into the spotlight with confidence. Still others took to beat-making, helping lay the foundation for something entirely their own. Whether writing, rapping, producing, or just brainstorming, each student had a hand in the creative process.

The culmination of their work? An original track titled “Emotions” — a powerful piece exploring themes of mental and emotional health through the lens of Hip Hop. With honest lyrics and raw expression, “Emotions” became more than just a song; it became a platform for students to share their stories, connect with one another, and find healing in the beat.

Through R.H.Y.M.E., students didn’t just learn how to make music. They practiced creative writing, public speaking, emotional expression, collaboration, and critical listening. The studio became a classroom, and the mic became a tool for empowerment.

In a world where young voices are often overlooked, this program proved just how vital those voices are — and how art can be a powerful tool for growth, healing, and community.

East Harlem, take note: the next generation of artists, thinkers, and leaders is already making noise.
