Park East HS: Bloom in Time

Featuring Art Direction by May Bukowski (2025)

The inspiration for this mural is the school’s motto, “Purpose, Preparation, Pride,” and evolved into the theme: “Bloom in Time.” The students involved were ninth graders, all in their first year at the school, and at first they were a little reserved during the brainstorming section of the project. However, personalities really started to emerge when they put pencil to paper, and the work they did in class leant to some excellent elements of the mural – including the piano keys that turn into subway cars and the hand holding a paintbrush. During the painting sessions, the students had fun laughing and painting together, and one student described the experience as, “very relaxing.” All together, the mural came together fast and efficiently, and was a nice change of pace for the students who got to take part during their schooldays. It will remain in the staircase at Park East as inspiration, and a reminder to the students to find purpose in their goals, prepare accordingly, and take pride in all that they accomplish.
