Better Together: PS 21 Students Create an Original School Anthem Through the Power of Music

Projectivity and Thrive Collective were proud to partner with PS 21 on Staten Island to bring students an inspiring creative experience that transformed their ideas, voices, and school pride into an original school theme song. Over the course of several weeks, students worked alongside R.H.Y.M.E. (Rhymes Help Young Minds Excel) teaching artists Eddy and Brandon to explore the art of songwriting. Through engaging workshops, students learned how music can be used to tell stories, express emotions, and build community.

From brainstorming lyrics to developing melodies, every step of the creative process encouraged collaboration, creativity, and confidence. The result is “Better Together,” an uplifting anthem that captures the spirit of PS 21 and celebrates the values that define its community. The song reflects the school’s culture and ethos, highlighting themes of unity, respect, perseverance, and belonging. Every lyric was shaped by student voices, making the anthem a genuine reflection of their shared experiences and aspirations. The project extended beyond songwriting as students also participated in the creation of an original music video, giving them the opportunity to experience another dimension of the creative process.

Working together in front of and behind the camera, students saw their vision come to life while developing teamwork, communication, and artistic expression. At Projectivity and Thrive Collective, we believe that arts education empowers young people to discover their voices and strengthen their communities. Collaborations like this demonstrate how music can inspire connection, foster school pride, and create lasting memories that students carry with them long after the final performance.

We are grateful to the students, educators, and leadership at PS 21 for embracing this journey with such enthusiasm, and to R.H.Y.M.E. teaching artists Eddy and Brandon for guiding students through an unforgettable creative experience. When a school community creates something together, the result is more than just a song—it becomes a shared story. “Better Together” is a lasting reminder that when students collaborate, support one another, and celebrate their unique voices, they truly are better together.
