Artist Plushie returned to her elementary school alma mater to lead the “FUNdamentals of PS 171” murals for the school auditorium.
This vibrant project reflects the voices and imaginations of students, brought to life through a series of classroom workshops and brainstorming sessions. Each of the six mural panels highlights one core value using student-generated drawings and ideas.
- Respect
Students often connected respect with taking care of the planet. The panel shows playful flower characters properly disposing of trash in recycling bins, representing how we show respect by caring for our environment together. - Diversity
Inspired by students drawing themselves as their favorite animals and bringing plush toys to class, this panel features a classroom photo of young animals from all over the world. It celebrates how our differences come together in a shared, joyful learning space. - Working Together
This scene captures collaboration—children helping each other paint the glowing school name under a starry sky, a cat adding paint to a palette, and a parent assisting a child with tying their shoes. It’s a tribute to teamwork between students, families, and the school community. - Family
Students envisioned families as colorful, unique characters—people and pets alike. Here, each holds a letter that forms the word “FAMILY,” growing from a vibrant garden. The metaphor reminds us that every member matters, and together we are whole. - Sharing
Drawings of students exchanging toys, flowers, food, and school supplies inspired this heartwarming panel. It represents everyday acts of kindness that build community in the classroom. - Soar
Seen from a bird’s eye view, this panel depicts students working side by side on their assignments—focused, helpful, and respectful. It reflects what teachers observe daily: students living out the school’s values through their actions.
The designs were painted on polytab and installed in six framed panels in the school auditorium, serving as a daily reminder of what makes the PS 171 community strong and united.
