Marie Curie HS: One Community

Thrive Collective returned to The Marie Curie High School in the Bronx to bring a third mural program to life. This year’s theme was inspired by the
school’s core values: Community, Courage, Curiosity, Commitment, and Compassion. With “community” at the heart of it all, the mural’s design blossomed from this central idea.

The project was brought to life by 11th and 12th grade art students, who, though initially a bit shy during the brainstorming phase, truly shined once they began sketching and painting. As soon as pencil met paper, their creativity and artistic skills radiated, revealing the depth of what they’ve learned throughout their time in art classes at MCHS. A shared vision emerged, revolving around the school’s vibrant diversity. At the center of the artwork is a joyful group of students, smiling together in a beautiful range of ethnicities and personal styles—an honest celebration of the community they represent.

Equally important was honoring the school’s surrounding neighborhood, Kingsbridge Heights. To root the mural in its home, the students included the Kingsbridge train station, the neighborhood’s distinct buildings, and the serene reservoir that sits across from the school.

Painting the mural became a calming, collaborative rhythm. Small groups of students took turns bringing each element to life, creating an atmosphere of focus, peace, and pride—a welcome contrast to the typical end-of-year hustle. For the seniors, this mural became a legacy, a piece of their story permanently woven into the school’s fabric. For the juniors, it was a joyful promise: something beautiful to return to next year, created by their own hands. This mural is more than just art on a wall—it’s a symbol of community, creativity, and the collective spirit of Marie Curie High School.
