Thrive Collective’s Art Academy is an interdisciplinary hands on experience for students. This spring at PS 34, University Settlement after school program students were invited to explore and interpret the theme “Tomorrow Starts Today” through beats, rhymes and a mural. During the R.H.Y.M.E portion of the academy scholars learned about songwriting, beat making and free styling. Ideas turned into words scribbled on chart paper and then into bars, a verse, a chorus and eventually a song. The project didn’t end there. After writing and recording an original song students performed that song in a dynamic music video that also features the mural making process. In “Take Care” students rap about taking care of the important things today to set themselves up for a better tomorrow. Throughout the process students worked with Thrive teaching artist, Randy Mason and also interacted with Thrive TBP Mentors and recording artist Lucas Writer. “Take Care” is more than a song. It’s the evidence of what’s possible when students are courageous enough to try something new and different. It’s a reminder that they are heard and seen and that the future is now because tomorrow starts today.
