NYC public school buildings may be closed through June, but this spring participating schools can win a FREE one-of-a-kind school mural. Every NYC Public School that registers as part of “Kindness Beats the Virus” will be eligible to win a FREE mural designed in the days before the quarantine by five students and street art legend Toofly. To register your school, complete this simple form. The mural will be awarded to the school that has the highest percentage of enrolled students participating in Thrive’s #KindnessBeatsTheVirus activities. The winning school will be chosen based on the number of public student Instagram posts that utilize both the #KindnessBeatsTheVirus hashtag AND the unique school hashtag included on the registration form.

The Hashtag Challenge
Use the #KindnessBeatsTheVirus hashtag and tag @NYCThrive. “Like” your favorites to feature them in an upcoming art exhibit. The exhibit will include two Hashtag Challenge categories. The top two entries from each category will have the opportunity to merchandise their submission as a collaboration with an acclaimed artist.
One of my *favorite* myths about the “American west” is that it was white. 1) the American west was northern Mexico 2) slavery was abolished in Mexico in 1829 (yes that makes Texas history even more fucked up) .
The “American west” was Indigenous, Black, mestizo, AND Asian.

From November 2016 to March 2017, The Studio Museum in Harlem showcased “The Black Cowboy" exhibition curated by Amanda Hunt. Cowboy offered a snapshot of Black communities with long histories of keeping and training horses, represented primarily through photographs and cinematic materials.

This photo of Ellis Harris was one in a series of black and white photos by Brad Trent. The portraits ran in The Village Voice, and feature members of the New York chapter of the Federation of the Black Cowboys (FBC). FBC was a New York City-based community that shares the legacy cowboy ancestors with African-American city youth through mentoring, rodeos, and school visits. A long-standing member of FBC, Harris became a cowboy after watching a black rodeo in Harlem in the 1970s.
